TIMELINE: Looking back at J-Mac’s big night, 20 years later

Jason McElwain gained national attention in 2006. McElwain, who has autism, was the boys basketball team manager at Greece Athena High School in suburban Rochester. Coach Jim Johnson let him suit up for the team’s final home game of the regular season against Spencerport. McElwain got his chance to play with 4:19 remaining and Athena already up big. After missing his first two shots, he went on to drain six three-pointers and another field goal to finish with 20 points – sending the home crowd into a frenzy. His big game went viral over the next few days. His inspirational story earned him visits from President George W. Bush and Magic Johnson, an ESPY award and a book deal, among other honors.
