A reading from the Second Book of Kings (19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36): In those days, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, “Tell Hezekiah, king of Judah, ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you into thinking that Jerusalem will not fall into the hands of the king of Assyria. You yourself have heard how the kings of Assyria have dealt with all the countries, destroying them. And will you be spared?’” Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple, spread it out before the Lord, and prayed: “Lord, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see. Listen to the message Sennacherib has sent to defy the living God. It is true, Lord: the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries and their lands, they have burned all their gods, for they are not gods, but the work of human hands, wood and stone, and they have destroyed them. Now, Lord our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the world may know that you alone, Lord, are God.” Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. This is the word the Lord has spoken against him: The Virgin Mary, Zion, despises you and mocks you; Jerusalem shakes her head at you. But out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, out of Mount Zion a survivor. The zeal of the Lord will accomplish this!’” Therefore, this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria: “He will not enter this city, nor will he shoot an arrow against it, nor will he approach it with a shield, nor will he build a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came, he will return, but he will not enter this city,” declares the Lord. “I will answer this city and save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.” That very night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp. Sennacherib, king of Assyria, broke camp, returned to Nineveh, and remained there. The Word of the Lord Psalm Psalm 47:2-3a, 3b-4, 10-11 R/. God has established his city forever Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise in the city of our God. His holy mountain, a beautiful height, the joy of all the earth. R/. Gospel A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (7:6, 12-14): At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn and tear you to pieces. Treat others as you would have them treat you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life.” And few find them. The Word of the Lord
