Each has a rich history that spans different periods, with visible traces of the past. Through these temples, you can trace the historical development of Buddhism in Japan. First is Hōryū-ji, built in 607. It is Japan’s oldest wooden architecture, founded by Prince Shōtoku during the Asuka period. This ancient temple, with its classical garan layout, features the Kondō and Five-Story Pagoda standing side by side, surrounded by a U-shaped corridor, leading to the Lecture Hall at the far end. The corridor also houses the Treasure House, making this the Western Precinct of Hōryū-ji. In the Eastern Precinct, you’ll find the renowned Yumedono, where it is believed that one can communicate with Buddha through dreams. The temple complex is remarkably well-preserved, with restoration efforts maintaining its historical feel, even showing some natural wear on the exterior. Next is Yakushi-ji, built in 680, about 70 years after Hōryū-ji, marking the transition from the Asuka to Nara period. Religion and architecture were already taking root in Japan, developing their unique characteristics. While the design still drew from Tang Dynasty influences, details and decorations began incorporating Japanese elements. Yakushi-ji is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, who presides over the Eastern Pure Land, described as a lavish world of gemstones and lapis lazuli in Buddhist scriptures. It’s said that, during the Nara period, the Kondō of Yakushi-ji was indeed adorned with gemstones and gold, with inlaid gold borders lining the paths. Finally, Tōshōdai-ji, built in 759, is a name you may already recognize. The temple was founded by the Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen (Ganjin), who endured five failed attempts before successfully arriving in Japan. At the time, Japanese monks often lacked discipline, with some becoming monks to evade labor duties. The Emperor sought to invite Ganjin to reform Japanese Buddhism through the introduction of proper monastic discipline. Ganjin’s journey brought with it new ideas in culture, medicine, and religion, earning him the highest respect in Japan. Ganjin passed away in Japan, and Tōshōdai-ji stands as a tribute to his legacy. Over the years, I’ve probably visited over 100 temples throughout Japan. I’ve never kept count, but temples, big and small, are scattered across this Eastern Pure Land. Perhaps this is why the land here feels so harmonious. For your next trip to Japan, especially to Nara or the Kansai region, be sure to visit these temples. They’ll fill your heart with a sense of spiritual satisfaction. Explore Japan’s most beautiful landscapes, moving freely and capturing every moment—temples, shrines, castles, villages, mountains, rivers, and beaches. I will document and share everything with you.
