Ponderosa: Big Pine of the Southwest - Sylvester Allred
Sylvester Allred is a former professor at Northern Arizona University, who spent much of his career studying the Ponderosa Pine tree, which is the predominant species in the forests of northern Arizona and the Flagstaff region. He sat down with me to discuss these majestic trees and what their role is in the greater environment. Sylvester is the author of the book, Ponderosa: Big Pine of the Southwest, which was a book I picked up in the summer of 2019 and became the inspiration for this interview. Dr. Allred also wrote a book about the Tassel Eared Squirrel which is a resident of these Ponderosa forests in Arizona. He broke down the relationship that Ponderosa's and the Tassel Eared Squirrel share with each other in a symbiotic circle with fungus to help all 3 species thrive for millennias. If you spend time in any of the western forests of North America, you're bound to stumble into these mighty giants known as Pinus Ponderosa. Enjoy!
