Stefanyk (Ukrainian writer, master of the expressionist short story, public figure, politician, ambassador of the Austrian Parliament from the Kingdom of Galicia and Volodymyr) wrote two short stories: "A Children's Adventure" and "Maria". The novella "illuminates the theme of Galicia in the First World War. It is worth noting that, appearing at the height of the war, the moment of speech in the novels coincides with the current moment in history, which makes them emotionally rich, and allows them to be considered among the most successful examples of expressionist writing... War causes a crisis of identity in a person, exacerbates the state of self-alienation and self-isolation, intensifies the feeling of abandonment and uselessness, therefore, in fact, the discourse of war is as close as possible to existentialism. After all, the philosophy of existentialism itself arose as a result of the elaboration of a number of discourses related to the war. It is not at all accidental that the main figure in Stefanyk's novella is called Mary. Her importance is evidenced by the fact that her name is taken as the title of the work. Actually, this biblical name returns us to the sources of Christianity, and its main references - kindness, mercy - remain relevant even during two thousand years, especially in such a turbulent time. Mary is the name of a woman-protector in Christianity, who in peacetime protects peaceful people, and in wartime - the dead. She is the only one who mourns them and preserves their memory" (from open sources).
