Google Just Revealed the End of Search as We Know It

Google I/O 2026 made one thing very clear: search is changing, and the open web may never work the same way again. After watching the official Google I/O 2026 keynote, it feels clear that Google is no longer just talking about search in the traditional sense. What we are seeing is the beginning of an AI-mediated internet, where users increasingly ask AI agents for answers instead of browsing websites themselves. In this video, I look at what AI search could mean for the future of the web, website traffic, creators, publishers, online businesses and the wider internet ecosystem. For years, search worked in a fairly simple way. You searched for something, Google gave you a list of links, and you visited websites. Those websites then earned traffic, attention, ad revenue, affiliate income, brand awareness, clients or sales. But AI search changes that relationship. If AI systems summarise the web, recommend products, answer buyer-intent searches and keep users inside the platform, what happens to the websites and creators who produced the original content in the first place? This also raises some important questions around trust. When AI-generated recommendations come from platforms that rely heavily on advertising and commercial incentives, how do we know the answer is genuinely the best result rather than the result most aligned with platform priorities? I also explore how this connects to the Dead Internet Theory, not in the conspiracy sense, but in the practical sense of AI-generated content being consumed, summarised and reused by future AI systems. AI starts feeding itself, and over time that could lead to lower-quality information, diluted source material and a more repetitive internet. There are positives too. AI search can make information faster, easier and more accessible. But the balance between convenience for users and sustainability for creators is going to become one of the biggest challenges facing the future of the web.
