There is Need to Invest More in Women’s Leadership - NGOCC By Chibesa Cecilia Mungulube The Non-governmental Gender Organisations' Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has called for greater investment in women's political leadership. Speaking yesterday during a live programme on Sky FM, NGOCC Executive Director Ms Anne Mbewe Anamela says more must be done to remove barriers that continue to prevent women from fully participating in Zambia's democratic processes. Ms. Anamela ssaid although more women are participating in this year's electoral process, sustained efforts are needed to ensure equal representation in decision-making. She disclosed that NGOCC’s Her Time is Now campaign was established to address the persistent underrepresentation of women in politics by equipping aspiring women leaders with leadership skills, mentorship and confidence to contest elective positions. She added that the campaign has also helped challenge harmful gender stereotypes while encouraging communities to embrace women in leadership. Despite recording an encouraging increase in the number of women seeking elective office compared to previous elections, Ms Anamela observed that women continue to face challenges, including political violence, online harassment, limited campaign financing and discriminatory social norms. She said these obstacles continue to undermine women's meaningful participation in politics. Ms Anamela urged political parties, traditional leaders, civil society organisations, communities and citizens to work together in creating an enabling environment for women leaders. She reaffirmed NGOCC's commitment to sustaining the Her Time is Now campaign beyond the 2026 General Elections through continued leadership development, advocacy and mentorship to ensure more women take up leadership positions across the country.
