The Allan Holdsworth String-Skipping Concept Every Jazz Guitarist Should Know
In this jazz guitar lesson, we're taking a deep dive into a modern fusion concept inspired by players like Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Herring, and Tim Miller. By limiting ourselves to just three strings at a time, we can create wide interval lines that break away from traditional scale patterns and open up a whole new approach to improvisation. We'll explore how this concept works with Major 7, Dominant 7, Minor 7, Minor 7b5, and Minor Major 7 arpeggios before applying the same idea to the major scale. From there, we'll work through all of the diatonic arpeggios in Bb major across the entire fretboard and then connect the concept to scale patterns starting on every note of the key. Finally, we'll look at an alternate string set to expand the possibilities even further. If you're looking to develop a more modern jazz guitar vocabulary, improve your fretboard visualization, or incorporate some of the wide interval sounds used by Allan Holdsworth and other fusion greats, this lesson will give you plenty of material to explore. In this lesson, you'll learn: • Wide interval arpeggio concepts • String-skipping techniques for jazz and fusion guitar • Major 7, Dominant 7, Minor 7, Minor 7b5, and Minor Major 7 arpeggios • Modern major scale fingerings • Diatonic arpeggios across the neck • Fretboard visualization strategies • Practical ideas for jazz and fusion improvisation Thanks for watching!
