It is Indian Railways' proposed route for the Char Dham Railway to connect to the Chota Char Dham. It is one of the initiatives of the Indian government to counter China's expansion. Wikipedia Line length: 125 km (78 mi) Stations: 12 Track gauge: 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) Track length: 125 km (78 mi) Status: Underconstruction Operating speed: 100 km/h (62 mph) Operator(s): Indian Railways 12 stations of Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail line announced DEHRADUN: The locations and names of 12 new railway stations which are to be built between  Rishikesh  and Karanprayag were announced by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) on Saturday. As per the letter issued to  Uttarakhand  government by RVNL, the sites where railway stations will come up are — New Rishikesh railway station in  Dehradun  district, Srinagar, Tehri, Shivpuri and Byasi in Tehri district, Devprayag and Dhari Devi in Pauri,  Rudraprayag  and Gholtir in Rudraprayag district, and Gaucher and Karanprayag in  Chamoli district . Notably, the project aims to extend rail connectivity to the Garhwal hills and connect the region with the plain areas. The construction of this railway line has been fast-tracked by the Narendra Modi government so as to improve pilgrim connectivity to the Char Dham shrines of Gangotri, Yamunotri,  Kedarnath  and  Badrinath , which are situated in the Garhwal Himalayas. According to railway authorities, Virbhadra-Rishikesh rail line is expected to become functional by 2019-20, while the rail line from New Rishikesh to Devprayag will become functional by 2023-24.
