Praia da Luz, Lagos, or Burgau, Time to Look at Retirement Options #retired #retirement #portugal PRAIA DA LUZ meaning Beach of Light – is a compact town in Portugal’s Algarve. It sits behind a sheltered bay with an ancient-fortress-turned-restaurant on one side and black-rock cliffs on the other. Shops, bars and eating places fill the town and run down past the church onto the patterned promenade, where summer craft stalls set out their wares. And it’s all topped off with a lovely stretch of sand. LAGOS: One of the most popular tourist destinations on the Algarve and certainly one of my favourites, Lagos is a bustling town full of activity, nightlife and modern attractions. However, it is also a town full of history and the monuments and architecture which take us back to the many different peoples who have settled here and the many maritime adventure which have started in Lagos' impressive natural harbour. The nearby beaches are among the best in the region and the rocky headland of Ponta da Piedade is outstandingly beautiful. BURGAU: The impressive golden sand beach stretches the entire width – around 350m of the bay. On either side of the beach are the typical steep cliffs of the west Algarve. This sheltered bay and gently sloping beach is the reason for Burgau’s existence, it offered the perfect natural harbour for launching and landing fishing boats. That’s probably the first thing you might notice when you arrive at Praia do Burgau, the central concrete boat launch. At its heart Burgau is still a fishing village. In the mornings and evenings, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of this fishing activity, with boats being launched or catches being landed, and of course you might be able to eat some at the nearby restaurants.
