Things to do and see in Madrid - A must-see just an hour away by train! A getaway you absolutely have to do if you're in Spain. We spent two days at El Escorial de San Lorenzo. We took advantage of the good weather to go trekking one day and the next day visit the monastery and explore the city. We took the train from Paco de Lucía station, which took about an hour. You can also take it from Chamartín station. In no time, you're surrounded by nature. On the first day, we went trekking in the mountains to the Abantos viewpoint. The walk from the monastery takes 45 minutes, and you can see the four towers of Madrid, El Escorial, and more. We took advantage of the beautiful day and walked a little further along the trail. Highly recommended. We spent the night at the Exe Victoria Palace Hotel. Highly recommended. On the second day, we went to El Escorial, which takes about 3 hours to explore. It's very beautiful. The entrance fee was €14 per person. What I liked most were the gardens.
