The Sutter Gun - The Cannon at Sutter's Fort
In this video, Jared discusses the Sutter Gun, one of our most popular items at Sutter's Fort, going over the history of the cannon and the steps needed to fire it. John Sutter purchased Fort Ross from the Russian American Fur Company in 1841. With the purchase, he received a field artillery cannon. The original cannon (the cannon at the Fort is a reproduction) was used during every major battle of the Mexican-American War. It's large wheels made the cannon easily movable and the cannon was fired often at the Fort, but the Fort was never attacked. Sutter's cannon crew would fire the cannon as a salute to visiting dignitaries, a tradition we carry on today when we fire the cannon during school educational programs, such as the Environmental Living Program, and during living history events. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is a California State Park located in the heart of Sacramento, California.
