Long ago, Ori was separated from the Spirit Tree in a storm that set off a chain of devastating events. He was adopted and raised by the bear-like creature Naru. The prologue shows how the Spirit Tree calls to Ori many years later, and then the Nibel Forest (the place where the game takes place) is dying. Naru dies due to a lack of food, leaving Ori an orphan again. Filled with grief and hopeless, Ori goes out into the forest until his strength finally leaves him and he dies. With his last strength, the Spirit Tree revives Ori, allowing him to embark on a quest to restore the Nibel Forest to its former glory. Right at the beginning, Ori finds a being of light named Sein, who reveals himself as the light and eyes of the Spirit Tree and guides and protects Ori on his mission. Ori is initially very weak and cannot attack enemies himself, so Sein takes over this role.
