After a short break from the Monotype series for various Solo Challenges, and especially the holidays, it's time to start a challenge again. Today, we're back with Game Freak's first game in the series, the iconic Pokémon Red and Blue. The type we'll be analyzing this time is also a type that Professor Oak's starters offer: the Grass type. As for the rules, they don't really change from those of Generation 3: The Canon costume I'll be wearing today is the only modification I'll be making to the original game. Why the Canon Trainer class? In Generation 1, many Canons only used Grass-type Pokémon, especially in Erika's Gym. Flower girls didn't exist yet. This is a monotype challenge, and therefore only Grass-type Pokémon will be allowed during the game. Be careful, CSlaves are prohibited if they aren't Grass-type. The goal is to evaluate the type's effectiveness in the game, so each obstacle must be overcome with a Pokémon that the Canon we'll be playing as today can capture. You don't have to capture every Pokémon of the relevant type you encounter, but it's strongly recommended to form a team of six if possible. Therefore, if a Pokémon only evolves to Grass-type and it becomes available while your team isn't yet complete, you can pause the adventure to capture and evolve it. Second rule to spice up the challenge and, above all, to make it interesting: It's forbidden to use items during the battle. PP Stalling all trainers is neither fun nor very strategically interesting. We can now answer the question: Can you finish Grass-type Pokémon as a Cannon? The start in Pallet Town is very classic; it's not necessary to beat Blue in your first battle. We set off to return to Jadielle to obtain the Pokédex, only to be let loose on the adventure and, above all, to have access to the Pokéballs in the shop. However, at the start of the game, the only Pokémon we can capture is after the first arena, which doesn't seem like an insurmountable obstacle anyway. We therefore pass through the Jadielle Forest, called the Jade Forest in French, to arrive at Argenta. There's no need to hang around in Pierre City, which we'll go and confront directly with our level 9 Bulbasaur. At this level, it doesn't yet know a super-effective Grass attack, but it has learned the Vampigraine attack, which is very useful for battles where the opponent has difficulty inflicting serious damage to our Pokémon. And this is the case here, where Racaillou only has normal attacks, which we can therefore heal directly, while slowly knocking it out with Charge. Against Onix, we have the opportunity to use all our attacks. We obviously start with our Seedless, and then the trick is to avoid the Ground and Rock Pokémon's Patience attack. We use Roar to lower its defense for our charge attacks, but also to make sure it doesn't reflect the damage we manage to do to it. Once again, slowly, we consume it while recovering the energy it makes us lose when it attacks. We have 1 badge, which allows us to continue east. There are a few scouts and girls on the road that we can easily control with our starter, but we especially hurry to reach Mount Moon. In the cave is our second Pokémon, Paras. It has the dual Grass/Insect type, which is quadruple weak to 3 types, so it is our duty to train it in the moon cave, even if it will be useless against Flying, Poison and Fire Pokémon. We reach Azuria by picking up the Nautilus fossil along the way, even though it won't be of any use to us in the game. We start by battling the rival on the Pepite Bridge to take advantage of the trainers there to train our Paras. The first Pokémon is the traditional Pidgeot. It inflicts Sand Blasts on us, and our Charge attack, however, struggles to deal serious damage when it lands.
