Delaware is a small northeastern state that was once one of the original 13 colonies. In fact, Delaware is the second smallest state in the country Delaware is located on an east coast peninsula called The Delmarva Peninsula. Delaware is nicknamed as The First State or The Diamond State. The reason Delaware is called the Diamond State is that Thomas Jefferson referred to Delaware as the jewel of all the states. Delaware is called The First State because it was the first state to ratify, or sign, the federal constitution on Friday, December 7, 1787. In fact, Delaware became a US state on that very day.
