Being a doctor is about more than medicine. This week, I took a break from plastic surgery training to attend a Nigerian birthday party with friends and family. It reminded me that while training is important, so is making time for the people who matter most. On transplant surgery, the days were long. Early mornings, late nights, and patients who depended on our team every day. It was rewarding, but it also showed me how easy it is to lose balance when medicine becomes your whole life. If you're a premed, medical student, resident, or healthcare worker, remember this: Your career is important. Your goals are important. But your relationships matter too. Medicine will always ask for more of your time. Learning when to step away and recharge is a skill that takes practice.
