In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Korean brands like Hyundai and Kia didn't enjoy the same prestige they do today. They tried to attract buyers with well-equipped, cost-effective cars. The Hyundai Atos is a prime example. The model arrived in Brazil in late 1999 in two different trims: the GL, which was the basic model, and the GLS, which was the most complete. It's not uncommon to find an Atos with air conditioning, power steering, power windows, and dual airbags—a rarity in a popular model of that era. Another interesting fact is that it offers three transmission options here in Brazil: a manual like the model in the video, a conventional 3-speed automatic with a torque converter, and a semi-automatic model, which doesn't require depressing the clutch to shift gears. Of the three, the manual is the easiest to maintain. In 2002, the model underwent a minor facelift, mainly changing the headlights and taillights. The model was sold until 2003, when it was discontinued in Brazil. It continued to be sold abroad until 2008. In 2019, it gained a new generation, being sold exclusively in India as Hyundai's cheapest car there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's very difficult to find information about this car online, but from what I've seen, a total of 2,800 Atos were sold during the period it was sold in Brazil. The price of a Hyundai Atos Prime like this ranges from R$8,000 to R$12,000. Keep in mind that what really affects these cars is their condition. And even back then, Hyundai already had a reputation for making robust cars. So much so that Hyundai offered a four-year warranty on each model. Unimaginable for a popular car in the 1990s. ENGINE ------------------------ Under the hood, we have a 1.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, which generates 57 horsepower and 8.5 kgfm of torque. Today, these numbers seem extremely low, but at the time, they were very common. A 2000 Fiat Uno 1.0 had exactly the same power. A Peugeot 106 had only 50 damn ponies. Back then, driving a 1.0 was sad! And according to its specifications, it does 0-100 km/h in about 15.1 seconds and can reach 141 km/h. This reinforces the idea that the Atos Prime is more of an urban car. And what's most impressive is that the Atos Prime is an extremely light car; it weighs only 810 kg. That is, half the weight of the Sportage we filmed the other day. But what's impressive here is that this engine is the same one that powered the Kia Picanto until 2011. It features multipoint injection, which was modern for the time, and is considered a very robust engine. And since the Picanto sold much more than it, finding maintenance parts is much easier.
