Professor Sebastian Szybka's lecture on the James Webb Telescope's hottest discovery to date. Four years ago, on Christmas Day 2021, we watched the launch of the rocket that carried the James Webb Telescope into space. The successor to the venerable Hubble Space Telescope, one of the most advanced human-made instruments, was created to bring us closer to dusty, mysterious star-forming regions, extrasolar planets, and the early universe. Among its discoveries are objects called little red dots (astrophysicists have really taken to that term). What are they? We don't know! But there's no shortage of hypotheses, and most of them have the potential to seriously disrupt science, transforming our understanding of galaxy evolution and black hole formation. Among the proposals to explain the nature of these mysterious, bright objects that existed billions of years ago are: Ancient galaxies, galaxies containing giant black holes, hybrid systems (stars and black holes), and quasistars (black holes surrounded by dense gas). In his lecture, Professor Sebastian Szybka will discuss the James Webb Telescope's hottest discovery to date and explain why astrophysicists struggle to understand the nature of these mysterious objects. Sebastian Szybka is a professor of physics at the Jagiellonian University Astronomical Observatory. He specializes in relativistic physics. For years, he has been popularizing science on the Copernicus channel and in "Tygodnik Powszechny," among others.
