Onder Professoren: Damiaan Denys & Jim van Os - Over psychiatrie

“Too many people are wrongly in psychiatric care,” Damiaan Denys, chairman of the Dutch Association for Psychiatry, recently stated, opening the debate. They do suffer, but they are not ill. Psychiatrist Jim van Os also acknowledges that the pressure on psychiatry is enormous, but argues that Denys speaks too easily about psychological suffering. The system must be addressed, not the patient dismissed. At De Balie, the two prominent professors will engage in a conversation about the future of Dutch psychiatry. About the speakers Damiaan Denys is a philosopher and professor of psychiatry at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). He has been chairman of the NVVP since 2016. His interview with NRC, titled “It is not normal to be beautiful and successful and to have everything under control,” sparked a great deal of discussion. Jim van Os is an epidemiologist and psychiatrist. Van Os is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). In NRC, he wrote a critical response to the interview with Denys together with Menno Oosterhoff: “Don’t dismiss a psychological problem as whining”.
