Sports news at: https://www.sportschau.de/ With a 2-1 victory, MSV Duisburg draws level on points with Cottbus and now occupies the relegation playoff spot. MSV Duisburg defeated Energie Cottbus 2-1 (1-0) in the top match. Thilo Töpken (32nd minute) and Dominik Kother (56th minute) scored for Duisburg, while Erik Engelhardt netted for Cottbus (90th minute). Cottbus thus maintains its narrow lead in second place, while Duisburg moves into third place, level on points, and remains in contention for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. The MSV Duisburg fans, who had already welcomed their team at the bus, created a fantastic atmosphere at the Wedau Stadium even before kickoff. Nevertheless, it was Energie Cottbus who initially started the match stronger. MSV's first clear-cut chance didn't come until the 15th minute, after Cottbus had already registered three shots on goal, following a short corner. Thilo Töpken got a shot away from the edge of the penalty area, about seven meters from goal, after a cross from Christian Viet, but goalkeeper Marius Funk made the save. After this opportunity, Duisburg began pressing high, attacking the visitors from the halfway line. The game was now more balanced. Both teams were putting up a good fight, not only in terms of skill but also physically. In the 27th minute, Erik Engelhardt lunged into MSV Duisburg goalkeeper Maximilian Braune. Braune had to receive treatment on the pitch but was able to continue playing. MSV Duisburg celebrated their season's best attendance at this match. Around 30,000 fans watched as Dominik Kother took a corner for MSV Duisburg in the 32nd minute. Once again, the corner found Töpken in the penalty area, and this time the striker headed the ball into the net. The jubilation over the long-awaited 1-0 lead was immense. Cottbus tried to find a quick response to going behind, but the Brandenburgers couldn't manage it because MSV Duisburg remained alert defensively and continued to press forward. However, neither team's attacking efforts yielded any results before halftime. Just seconds after the restart, MSV Duisburg once again came dangerously close to the visitors' goal. The Zebras didn't manage to get a shot off, but in doing so, they immediately demonstrated their intention to maintain control of the game in the second half. While Cottbus weren't completely outplayed, they lacked the creativity to break down Duisburg's defense. MSV Duisburg remained confident and continued their high-pressing game from the first half. They focused particularly on Cottbus's key player, Tolcay Ciğerci, whom Duisburg gave no space. This pressure paid off again for MSV in the 56th minute: Krüger sent a well-placed through ball to Kother, who outpaced the Cottbus defense and fired a shot from close range. Funk had no chance to stop the 2-0 lead. Cottbus responded to the goal with a double substitution, and the pressure to overcome Duisburg's dominance intensified. Even with the help of substitutes Tolga Ciğerci and Can Moustfa, the visitors couldn't turn the game around. Duisburg remained dominant for much of the second half. Nevertheless, Cottbus continued to fight and repeatedly threatened MSV Duisburg, as exemplified by Engelhardt's spectacular shot that hit the crossbar in the 77th minute. MSV Duisburg narrowly avoided conceding a goal. This golden opportunity visibly boosted Cottbus's confidence. In the final ten minutes, the Brandenburg side increased the pressure, and the game was now primarily played in Duisburg's half. #sportschaufußball #3liga #energiecottbus #msvduisburg
