Christian nationalism is a complex and often misunderstood concept that merits our careful consideration. This ideology blends conservative Christianity with nationalist ideals, frequently leading to the exclusion and oppression of those who don't fit a narrow definition of national identity. While we acknowledge America's significant Christian influences, it's crucial to understand that the Constitution does not establish it as a Christian nation, but rather protects religious freedom for all. We must be wary of extreme forms of Christian nationalism that can lead us to demonize political opponents and view the world in stark, divisive terms. This approach stands in direct contrast to Jesus' teachings and example. Scripture reminds us that Jesus rejected worldly power and taught His disciples to be servants rather than authority figures. The Apostle Paul instructs us to put away bitterness and embrace kindness and forgiveness. These teachings should guide our approach to faith and citizenship. Ultimately, Christian nationalism diverges from true Christianity. As followers of Christ, we are not called to the pursuit of power and control. Instead, we are called to embrace Jesus' way of servant leadership, compassion, and love for all people, regardless of their political or religious beliefs. Together, we can be a community that reflects Christ's love, working towards transformation and positive impact in our world, guided by kindness, curiosity, and a commitment to building bridges rather than walls.
