Her (2013): Can AI Ever Love Us Back?
I've always had a soft spot for Her (2013). The Spike Jonze film explores subjects of AI companionship, love in the age of artificial intelligence, and whether machines can truly feel or help people like Joaquin Phoenix's character Theodore. Because these things have only become more relevant in the 13 years since it first came out, I thought it would be interesting to revisit Her and analyze it. Especially on account of, well, ya know, the whole AI hype cycle, AI bubble thing that we've got going on these days. Because, really, the film is asking a lot of questions that the average person is (or should be) asking themselves today. Is it healthy to have an AI girlfriend? Is it healthy to trust artificial intelligence with our private data and private thoughts? Do AI assistants or chatbots such as Scarlett Johansson's Samantha in the film (or Grok, Replika, Character AI, or ChatGPT in our world) have the potential to help us, or are they merely halfway decent simulacrums of intelligence? So in this video, I'll be sitting down to discuss Her. I'm gonna talk about Theodore and Samantha's connection and how the film paints it as a beautiful, healthy relationship that, when placed under a bit of scrutiny in the greater context of the society depicted in the film, is... maybe still kind of healthy, while also reflecting a loneliness epidemic that could be lurking just out of sight in that world. Then, as I'm one to do on this channel, I'll shift gears for the B-side of this video to explore the ways that artificial intimacy works in our world, why it's designed to work that way, and whether or not we should accept that as a cost of living in our modern, AI-first world. In short, I'll be explore whether AI companions are a realistic solution to modern day loneliness, or if it's just a smokescreen that shields a data scam.
