A "war of the cities" began between Ukraine and Russia, and the aggressor is not prepared for it

Ukraine is gradually changing the nature of its war with Russia, increasingly launching strikes against military and energy facilities deep behind enemy lines . According to The New Yorker, it is precisely this campaign of deep strikes against Russia that has become a problem for the aggressor and has even influenced US President Donald Trump's shift in rhetoric toward Ukraine. The publication recalls that Russia has been regularly attacking Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. In June alone, large-scale strikes were launched against Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and other cities, while in early July, two attacks on the capital claimed the lives of dozens of people. At the same time, Ukraine has recently struck a number of strategic targets in Russia, including an oil terminal in St. Petersburg, a satellite communications center near Moscow, a facility producing components for Russian missiles in Volgograd, and major oil refineries. In Crimea, as the author notes, the systematic strikes have led to fuel shortages, regular power outages, and even forced local authorities to close children's summer camps. As the article states, the war is effectively being waged on two fronts. The first is on the front where Russian troops continue their offensive, although the pace has slowed significantly. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Russia has been losing over 30,000 troops monthly this year, advancing less than 100 meters per day in some areas. "This is one of the slowest rates of advance in any war in the last century," the report, quoted by the publication, says. The second front became the air confrontation. The author notes that European countries financed the development of Ukrainian long-range strike systems, while the United States, despite the cessation of direct military aid, continues to provide intelligence for precision strikes. It was the combination of European funding, American intelligence, and Ukrainian production that allowed Kyiv to significantly enhance its capabilities. The journalist also mentions the development of the new FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile. As the publication notes, Russia is increasingly using ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, against which Ukraine desperately needs Patriot missile systems and interceptor missiles. Despite the agreement between Trump and Zelenskyy to license the production of such interceptors in Ukraine, it is unlikely that their rapid deployment will be possible. Expert Michael Kofman warns that without an end to mutual attacks, Ukrainian cities could find themselves in an extremely difficult situation by the end of autumn. At the same time, the author concludes, it is precisely the escalation of long-range strikes that is already forcing Russia to experience for the first time the very risks Ukraine has faced since the onset of a full-scale war. The publication notes that recently even Russian oligarchs and influential officials have begun talking about the need to end the war. Specifically, this has been expressed by Sberbank CEO and longtime Putin ally Herman Gref, as well as acting governor of the Belgorod region Alexander Shuvaev. At the same time, the author of the publication acknowledges that the only one whose opinion truly matters is Putin. And in his recent public appearances, he has demonstrated a stubborn desire to continue the war indefinitely and boasts of largely imaginary successes on the front. A source in the Russian Ministry of Defense interviewed by the author of this publication compared the current stage of the war in Ukraine to the so-called "War of the Cities" during the Iran-Iraq conflict of the 1980s. Back then, the frontline was similarly frozen, and both sides focused on indiscriminate air strikes against each other's cities.
