There is still no national consensus on the issue of including the May 18 Uprising in the Constitution. It is time for the historical academic community to uncover more self-evident truths, but legally blocking even criticism is nothing but political agitation. If we continue to add only incidents related to the overthrow of the government to the Constitution, the very spirit of the Constitution could veer toward revolution and agitation. The true nature of the May 18 Uprising remains ambiguous. If it had been led by activist groups, it would have been revealed long ago, and the theory of North Korean intervention has not been confirmed as evidence in CIA documents. Kim Il-sung habitually took credit for events occurring in South Korea. While there were some spies and activists who dreamed of revolution, the vanguard force that led the entire May 18 Uprising has not been clearly identified. Arguments that push this narrative in one direction lack sufficient evidence from both the left and the right. The gist of the facts is as follows. Chun Doo-hwan and the New Military Group staged a coup, national resistance against it exploded in Gwangju, and citizens stood up against the violent suppression. It is called the struggle for democratization because that resistance was democracy, not because every action was right. The fundamental responsibility lies with Chun Doo-hwan and the New Military Group. We must be able to criticize the May 18 Uprising as well. Just as we acknowledge the significance of the Donghak Peasant Uprising while criticizing the inhumane acts committed during that process, we must honor what deserves honor and call wrongs what were wrong regarding May 18. Suppressing criticism itself is, in fact, an act that undermines the spirit of May 18. To prevent the public from being mobilized by politicians' incitement, an attitude of calmly maintaining distance and demanding clearer evidence is necessary.
