Herpes is common, often misunderstood, and surrounded by stigma. An estimated 3.7 billion people, under age 50, globally have herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. And, a further 491 million people aged 15–49 (13%) worldwide have herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection. The former is generally caused by oral contact, whilst the latter is caused by sexual contact. Despite the fact so many people are living with the viral condition, many people are still unsure how best to manage it due to the social stigmas that exist around it.
