Gizeh Pyramiden: Zwischen Scam, Chaos und Weltwunder

A visit to the Pyramids of Giza – and right at the start, the first scam attempt. Even before I've entered the grounds, unofficial vendors try to sell me an overpriced ticket. But I buy my ticket directly at the official ticket office. On the sprawling site, the three world-famous main pyramids await me: Cheops, Chephren, and Menkaure. I explore the grounds, even going inside a smaller pyramid – though it's hardly worth it, as the interior has been completely cleared out. The structure remains impressive nonetheless: How could people, some over 4,000 years ago, have built such monumental structures? Outside, chaos reigns once again: horse-drawn carriages alongside honking cars, crowds of people, and a mix of history and the present. Finally, I take a look at the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) – a modern highlight with international aspirations.
