Did God really require human sacrifice to forgive sin — and what was Abraham doing on Mount Moriah? Continuing Soteria Season 13 in the 30 Days of Glory 2026 series, Dr. Abel Damina digs into the Greek roots of salvation — sozo, soteria, and sotah — from 2 Timothy 3:15, Luke 19:9, and Matthew 1:21, showing that salvation is anchored in the person of Christ and is deliverance from the consequences of sin rather than a reward for ritual. He then turns to a question at the heart of the week's study: did the death of Jesus fulfill the law? Working through Matthew 5:17-19 and Luke 24:44-47, he explains the Greek words parerchomai and pleroo to show what it meant for Christ to "fulfill" rather than abolish the law and the prophets, before landing on Romans 5:6-11 and the statement that Christ died for the ungodly while we were yet sinners. From there the teaching moves into Genesis 22 and the account of Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah, tracing the word "offered up" (prosphero) through Hebrews 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11, and contrasting it with anaphero in James 2:21-22. Dr. Damina argues that Abraham was not being tested by God in the sense of God learning something new — the Greek word for "tried" in Hebrews 11:17 means to examine or prove, not to test — but was instead demonstrating and proving to himself an understanding of a gospel already preached to him in Genesis 15 and Galatians 3:8. He walks through the meaning of monogenes ("only begotten") and presents the journey to Moriah as a prophetic parable that foreshadowed the substitution later fulfilled at the cross. The session closes with the question that sets up the rest of the week: if human sacrifice was not something God demanded, why did Jesus have to die?
