Restored History in Color: The Great American Migration and the American Life in 1900

The history of American immigration is defined by incredible human endurance, intense political scrutiny, and the unyielding pursuit of a better life. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, industrial changes and severe political unrest brought crippling poverty to Southern Europe, while reaching as far north as the industrial cities of Poland and Russia. To escape starvation, heavy military conscription, and the historic persecution of the police, over 12 million men, women, and children made the monumental decision to leave their native lands for the United States. This immense human migration required a massive logistical network. Travelers gathered in major European ports like Naples, Bremen, and Liverpool to board massive steamships. Upon reaching the sea, the immigrants were entirely in the hands of the steamship companies, where they endured extreme conditions. Traveling in the dark, suffocating depths of steerage, passengers survived up to a month at sea, given only a tin plate, a fork, and meager rations of bread and soup. They endured the throbbing engines, the odor of spoiled food, and terrifying waves, with many praying for the ship to sink just to end the misery. Through beautifully restored and colorized archival footage, this documentary chronicles the brutal journey across the Atlantic and the unshakeable hope that fueled the greatest migration in history.
