This week’s Virtual Safari begins with one of those unforgettable moments the bush occasionally gifts us… a moment that stops you in your tracks. After a call came in from Melvin and Milton about a newly discovered lion den, we raced down there, unsure of what we’d find. What we saw left us completely speechless: four tiny lion cubs, only a few days old, still wrapped in soft downy fur and huddled together in the open. With the mother away hunting, we kept our visit as brief as possible — just long enough to capture a small amount of footage and confirm their age. At this stage, their entire survival depends on their mother not being disturbed, so we made the call to zone off the area for the next three weeks to give her and the cubs the space they desperately need to settle and grow stronger. A few days earlier, we’d had a very different — but equally magical — lion experience. The other two Kambula lionesses and their six cubs, now around ten months old, were bursting with energy. Wrestling, tackling, tumbling… the kind of confident, chaotic play that only young lions can pull off. To witness both extremes in the same week — the fragility of newborn life, and the exuberance of older cubs finding their place in the pride — is a privilege that never gets old. The Kambula lineage continues to thrive… …but with the Gijima Males now moving deeper into the area, the question is: how long will this stability last?
