Illusionism (or Prestidigitation) is the performing art that aims to entertain the public by giving the illusion that something impossible or supernatural has occurred. Practitioners of this activity are called illusionists or magicians. Although illusionists appear to defy the laws of physics, in reality, the numbers they create have nothing supernatural about them, being illusions performed through natural means. History The Magician, a painting depicting a medieval illusionist (Hieronymus Bosch). Illusionism is one of the oldest forms of entertainment. The first written description of a magic act as a performing art appears in Ancient Egypt and dates back to 1700 BC. The document in question is called the Westcar Papyrus and is currently located in the Egyptian Museum in Berlin. Since that time, there are thousands of records of performances, which we now recognize as illusionism, throughout history. Illusionists of the past were often seen as possessing supernatural powers, which resulted in harsh persecution during the Inquisition. The first book in which explanations of illusionist acts appear is called The Discovery of Witchcraft, and was written by Reginald Scot in 1584 with the aim of demonstrating that supernatural powers do not exist. In Portugal, the first written description of an illusionist act appears in the book Thesouro de Prudentes in 1612 by Gaspar Cardoso de Sequeira. The profession of illusionist, in the current sense of the term, only gained notable prestige from the 18th century onwards. One of the great promoters of modern illusionism was Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-1871), a French national. His background as a watchmaker allowed him to create original illusions of great ingenuity and spectacle, which he presented in his small theater for the Parisian elite. Robert-Houdin is often referred to as the "father of modern illusionism" as he was one of the first illusionists to bring magic to the elegant stages of theaters and private parties, moving away from the traveling magician who performed in the streets and fairs. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Hungarian-born illusionist Ehrich Weiss (1874-1926) became famous, adopting the stage name Harry Houdini, inspired by Robert Houdin. His acts frequently involved escapes from handcuffs, chains, and straitjackets. Many other illusionists have brought prestige and contributed to the evolution of illusionism, including Alexander Herrmann, Harry Kellar, Howard Thurston, Dante, Chung Ling Soo, Charles Carter, Dai Vernon, and Harry Blackstone. More recently, names like Doug Henning, Siegfried and Roy, David Copperfield, Lance Burton, David Blaine, Penn and Teller, Criss Angel, and Steven Frayne (Dynamo) have become celebrities in the world of illusionism. In Portugal, during the 20th and 21st centuries, the illusionists Conde d'Aguilar (1909-1988), Jolson (1922-1995), Luís de Matos, Helder Guimarães, David Sousa, and Mário Daniel became well-known to the general public. In 1948, the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques or FISM (International Federation of Magic Societies) was founded, becoming one of the most respected organizations in the magic community.
