STEPHEN MALLINDER (CABARET VOLTAIRE) INTERVIEW

Cabaret Voltaire co-founder Stephen ‘Mal’ Mallinder kindly agreed to an interview back in 2020, in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview was intended for an academic course focused on sonic branding. I first saw Cabaret Voltaire at the Futurama Festival in Leeds in 1979 and having attended their performance in Los Angeles recently (touring North America for the final time), I thought it would be the right moment to post the audio from my interview with Mal. Stephen Mallinder has published numerous academic papers, and gained his PhD in music and popular culture from Murdoch University in Australia in 2011 with his thesis Movement: Journey of the Beat. He has been researched at the Art Design Media Centre and teaches on Digital Music & Sound Art at the University of Brighton. Stephen Mallinder’s Keynote addresses include "Life in Music" at the Red Bull Music Academy (Melbourne, 2006), "Signal to Noise (1973–83) Music Technology" (Sydney International Festival of the Arts 2010) and the first academic Kraftwerk conference: "Music, Modernity and Movement" (Aston University, 2015). Cabaret Voltaire are an English music group formed in Sheffield in 1973 and initially composed of Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson. Named after the Zürich nightclub that fostered the early Dada movement, the band are often characterized as among the most innovative and influential electronic acts of their era and their single “Nag Nag Nag” is regarded as a post punk classic. “Way ahead of their time, Cabaret Voltaire’s blend of dance music, techno, dub, house and experimental made them, without a doubt, one of the most influential British electronic artists of the last 50 years”. -Mute Records https://mute.com/artists/cabaret-volt... #CabaretVoltaire #ElectronicMusic #techno #ExperimentalMusic
