Dyeing with Carrot Tops
This video shows, step by step, how I dyed cotton fabric with carrot tops. The results really surprised me! I test out 3 different mordanting methods to see which works best. I also do some color fastness tests to see how this carrot top dye holds up after being exposed to sunlight. Terms I use explained: Mordanting - prepping fabric to bond with the dye WOF (weight of fiber) - when measuring out ingredients for dyeing/mordanting, most of the time you use the "weight of fiber" as the main reference point. Fiber refers to the fabric. So 10% WOF is 10% of the weight of the fabric you are dyeing. Cellulose fabrics - fabrics made of plant material. This includes cotton, linen, hemp, flax. (You could include rayon, lyocell, tencel, modal in this category, but I would describe those as "derived from plant material" instead.) Calcium Carbonate - I use this term interchangeably with "chalk" because they are the same thing. Calcium Carbonate is the pure compound without any additives. Aluminum Acetate - a metal salt that is a great mordant for cellulose fibers. Alum - the Alum I'm using here is Potassium Aluminum Sulfate, it is also a metal salt used for mordanting. It's easier to find (and cheaper) than Aluminum Acetate, but on its own, it doesn't work very well for cellulose fibers. Aluminum Sulfate is also referred to as "Alum". Alum (Potassium Aluminum Sulfate) - https://chromaticnatureclothing.com/p... Soda Ash - https://chromaticnatureclothing.com/p... Dye Fixative - Since making this video I've stopped using this product. I realized its ingredients are not as eco-friendly as I would like them to be, so I do not want to promote it. This is not a necessary step and can be eliminated. Professional Textile Detergent - https://www.dharmatrading.com/ Thermometer - https://www.amazon.com/Thermometer-Co...
