THANGKA TALKS 01: CHENREZIG's 1000 arms explained by Carmen Mensink

This Thangka Talk on Chenrezig (Skt.: Avalokiteshvara), the Buddha of Compassion, is a small part of Carmen Mensink’s 1hr lecture that she offers during her Chenrezig Buddha drawing course. This video has subtitles in English, Dutch and Italian (see settings below right) Tibetan Buddhist Art introduces Thangka Talks with Carmen Mensink: a series of super short lectures explaining the symbolism in Tibetan art.  The talks can be about the different Buddhas and their symbolism (male Buddhas such as the Medicine Buddha and female Buddhas like Green Tara and White Tara), mudras (hand gestures), ritual implements, Tibetan mandalas, mantras, and Tibetan symbols (such as the Lotus flower and the rest of the Eight Auspicious Symbols). This short lecture is about Chenrezig (called "Avalokiteshvara" in Sanskrit, "He who hears the cries of the world") is the Buddha of Compassion and he is seen as the patron saint and protector of Tibet. His mantra OM MANI PADME HUM is therefore the most recited mantra in Tibet. Chenrezig can appear in many different forms as you will see on the thangkas shown in this talk.  His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism is considered the earthly incarnation of Chenrezig. Carmen teaches the art of Thangka Buddha drawing and Buddhist painting in the Tibetan tradition as well as Buddhist meditation and philosophy, at museums, universities, and spiritual centers around the world.
