The End of a Love Affair: Elmer Bischoff, Leaving Abstraction

Elmer Bischoff (1916-1991) was an American painter who was one of the founders of the Bay Area Figurative style. After returning from military service in WWII Bischoff taught at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and was activre making and showing Abstract Expressionist paintings. Then, in late 1952 he returned to figuration, joining his friend David Park who taken his abstact paintings to the Berkeley dump in late 1949. This video explores the context of Bischoff's change of style and relates it to changes in his personal life.
