According to the Ramayana story, the reason for the war between Lord Rama and Ravana was the cutting of Shurpanakha's nose. Neither Lakshman would have cut her nose, nor brother Ravana would have got angry and kidnapped Sita and nor there would have been a war between Lord Rama and Ravana for her... So let us take you today to that place which is related to the Ramayana story, where Shurpanakha's nose was cut, where Ravana kidnapped Sita and all this happened during the time when Lord Rama was serving the sentence of 14 years of exile. This place is none other than Panchavati, which is located on the banks of the Godavari river near Nashik in Maharashtra. There are five banyan trees here and this is why this place was named Panchavati. Panchavati is an important religious place for Hindus and there are many temples dedicated to Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshman here. Taking a dip in the Godavari river flowing from here is also considered auspicious. Kumbh Mela is held here once in 12 years. It is said that during the exile, Lord Rama lived here with Sita and Lakshman in a hut. He was told by sage Bharadwaj to stay in Panchavati. This used to be a part of the Dandakaranya forest. Near Ram Kutia was Tapovan, this is the place where Lakshman cut off Shurpanakha's nose. Nose is also called Nasika and hence Nashik got its name.
