REVIEW: The IWC Portugieser Automatic 42 & 40 Get Slimmer Cases and New Colours for 2024

Next to the Portugieser Chronograph receiving an aesthetic update, there are a couple more things to talk about. As a collection, the Portugieser can trace back its roots to the 1930s, when IWC adopted highly precise pocket watch movements in wrist-worn watches. In the decades that followed, the Portugieser has evolved into one of IWC's evergreens, known for its style and refinement. The range comprises simple automatic watches all the way to Tourbillons and Perpetual Calendars. But in the case of the Portugieser, simple, does not mean there's nothing to be discovered. On the contrary even, as we discover with the new IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 & 42 editions. The new IW5017 and IW3584 feature a completely re-engineered case construction with a slender side profile, making them particularly elegant and refined. Double box-glass sapphire crystals offer an excellent view of the dials, which are elaborately finished with 15 layers of transparent lacquer. Larger aperture sapphire crystals on the back showcase the IWC manufactured movements from the 52000 and 82000 calibre families, both featuring Pellaton winding systems with ceramic components. Selected models are presented in new design codes with the dial colours Horizon Blue, Obsidian, and Dune reflecting the never-ending cycle of day and night and underscoring the timeless appeal of the Portugieser’s design.
