#FatherJosephJeonSamyong #CatholicStudio 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, 2026 – Fear Can Be Removed Only Through the Proclamation of the Gospel Praise be to Jesus! I hope you had a good day today. Let us share the Gospel meditation for the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today's Gospel, Jesus repeats the same words three times. "Do not be afraid." Not once, but three times. This reveals what the most persistent enemy of our faith is. It is fear. Then Jesus commands: "Proclaim from the rooftops what you heard whispered to you. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." (Refer to Matthew 10:27-28) However, there is a secret here that we are prone to missing. Jesus does not say, "Proclaim after you have overcome fear." He says, "Proclaim, and you will not be afraid." The order is reversed. We usually think that we will confess love when fear disappears, and that we will preach the Gospel only when fear has passed. However, for those who wait like that, that day never comes. This is because fear is not something to be overcome alone in a room. Fear is finally shattered only within the relationships where one opens their mouth to reach out to someone—specifically, within the relationships where one proclaims God. I would like to first share a story that is all too real to illustrate how this fear imprisons a person in the prison of isolation. It is the case of a young man shared by a psychiatrist. Consumed by the thought that people would dislike him, this young man never reached out to anyone first. Even when a friend sent a text message asking how he was doing, he hesitated for days, worrying, "What if it gets awkward if I reply? What if they find it bothersome?" and ultimately could not bring himself to reply. As relationships were severed one by one, the young man became convinced, "People really do dislike me." The doctor said that what made him lonely was not the hatred of others, but his own fear of hiding away first out of fear of being hated. This is precisely the terrifying aspect of fear. Fear leaves us alone, and once we are alone, we lose even "relationships," the only way to overcome fear. Consequently, fear grows ever larger. The favorite food of fear is isolation. There is also a story of someone who lost the love of a lifetime because they edited the truth in their own mind out of fear of rejection. A soldier who fought in the Vietnam War lost both legs after stepping on a landmine. He had a fiancée back home to whom he had promised to marry. He secretly visited her house in a wheelchair, and even as he saw her weeping while missing him, he concluded: "She will leave me if she sees me without legs." Fearing rejection, he had a comrade deliver false news that he had been killed in action. A few years later, upon hearing that she was marrying someone else, he went to the wedding to offer his blessings from afar, only to break down completely. The groom with whom she was exchanging vows turned out to be a disabled veteran who had lost both arms and legs. What if, instead of harboring his fear alone, he had approached her and simply asked, "Would you love me even without my legs?" He did not bring his fear into the relationship; instead, he reached a conclusion in his head all by himself. That is why he lost his love. Now, let us turn to the Old Testament to see how the same fear destroys a person. When Moses did not come down from Mount Sinai, the people at the foot of the mountain trembled with anxiety and surrounded High Priest Aaron. Aaron was a man who knew the law prohibiting the making of idols better than anyone. However, he was afraid of the gaze of the angry crowd. Fearing rejection and abandonment, he altered the law to appease the crowd and ended up molding a golden calf (see Exodus 32). Behold. What brought down Aaron was not the crowd, but his fear of the crowd. Instead of proclaiming God in the face of fear, he made an idol as fear commanded. As a result, three thousand people died that very day. If we cut away the truth to avoid being hated by people, a golden calf of destruction is erected in the center of our souls. However, there is someone who took the exact opposite path in the same wilderness and in the face of the same fear. That is Moses himself. When God called him from the burning bush, Moses remained afraid to the very end and made excuses. "I am not a man of speech" (see Exodus 4:10). Had he been alone, he would never have been able to stand before Pharaoh. Yet, how does God remove fear? He says, "I will be with you" (see Exodus 3:12), and places his brother Aaron in his mouth. Moses's fear was not something he overcame alone. It melted away within his relationship with God, who was with him, and within the relationship with the person sent to his side. The two men stood facing each other at the same burning bush; Moses trusted in the One going with him and brought his fear into the relationship, whereas Aaron embraced the fear of the...
