We returned to the Ani region of Akita about a year after making Matagi Monpe. We visited the legendary 92-year-old Matagi, Yoshitaro Matsuhashi. My traveling companions were Masuda-kun, an Ani Matagi; Aoki-san, an Akita Matagi; and Kakeru-kun from Matsuhashi Ryokan, who returned to Ani this year and aspires to continue the Matagi tradition. Yoshitaro generously shared his knowledge and experience, while occasionally smiling and looking confidently toward the Matagi of the future.
