Skoda Karoq vs. Geely Atlas Pro – it's becoming the norm for Chinese all-wheel-drive crossovers to compete for top honors even with European 4x4s. The Skoda Karoq is a European with German roots, assembled at a new plant in Kaluga. The Chinese-Belarusian Geely Atlas Pro is also partly European – it has a Volvo engine, and the Swedish company itself has recently been controlled by the Chinese Geely. So both competitors have plenty of modern technology. We tried to match the competitors as closely as possible in terms of specifications and price. The Geely Atlas Pro and Skoda Karoq have 1.4-liter and 1.5-liter engines, respectively, and both are priced around a couple of million rubles. It's worth noting that the Chinese themselves admit to borrowing the engine from the Swedish Volvo they acquired. They also used another Swedish idea – a mild hybrid. So, under the white hood, in addition to the 177-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder engine, we also have a 13-horsepower electric motor, which is supposed to add performance and curb throttle. But the Skoda isn't a pushover either. It saves gas by shutting off a couple of cylinders when possible, turning into a turbocharged twin. Both cars have dual-clutch automatic transmissions, but the Chinese one has seven speeds, while the Czech one currently only has six. We were most interested in the all-wheel drive system. The Skoda Karoq surprised us in our previous tests by driving off three slippery rollers. We didn't dare put the Geely Atlas Pro on rollers, giving it a chance to immediately prove itself on tough off-road terrain. Especially since the Geely Atlas Pro boasts an off-road mode, something the Karoq doesn't. So, let's see who'll be the first to crash?
