A 19-year-old girl with a fighter's heart, big dreams, and a determination to prove that "women can do it, and they will." Ms. Kwankao Phong-utok, or Jay, is a 19-year-old female lion dancer from the Golden Dragon Lion Dance Troupe, "Student of the Great Brahma" in Talat Phlu. Jay is the seventh child in a family of seven children. She grew up with the lion dance troupe, an 80-year-old legacy passed down from grandfather to father, and continued by her eldest brother. Jay has been involved with lions since childhood, starting as the "top kid," the kid at the top of the lion dance group, with four to six other members in the team pushing them higher. Today, Jay can do everything at home, from lion heads and tails to drums, cymbals, and cymbals. Jay's favorite position is the lion head dance. Once she masters it, she can make the lion look like a wiggling cat, and the audience admires and appreciates her. The hardest part is the lion's tail, which obscures the view of those behind her. At my family, we practice very hard, especially on show or competition days. Even though it's tiring, I have a way of coping. My heart is set on one thing: I want my troupe to achieve fame, to continually improve myself, to let others see my lion dance performances, and to make the disciples of Thao Maha Phrom famous, waving the Thai flag abroad. I've been performing lion dances for 17 years. I've been doing this since I was 2 years old. I'm not afraid of it at all. I just enjoy it. I've never thought about pursuing another career, but I've even thought about taking my father's place. I'm very proud to have grown up surrounded by lions. When I saw that our troupe performed abroad, I was incredibly proud of my father's creation. I want to continue his father's legacy until the end of my life. My troupe competed in Malaysia and placed 10th out of 42 teams. My troupe will compete again in Roi Et Province for the Royal Trophy. My dream is to get funding to renovate my troupe, to get new clothes for the team, and to repair the lion heads. A Stage of Inspiration from Geniuses of All Ages A variety show for the whole family.
