Today we are in Paterson, New Jersey — New Jersey’s third-largest city and a place historically known as “Silk City” due to its once-thriving textile industry. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Paterson was considered the silk capital of the world and served as one of America’s most important industrial centers. Today, Paterson is home to more than 159,000 residents and remains one of the most densely populated and diverse cities in the United States. While the city continues to face many of the same challenges seen in urban centers across America — including poverty, crime, disinvestment, and aging infrastructure — Paterson also shows signs of redevelopment and revitalization. In this documentary, we take a raw and unfiltered drive through Downtown Paterson to examine how the city is holding up in today’s challenging economic climate. Is Paterson simply another example of urban decline, or is there evidence of renewal taking place? Our tour begins in the city’s historic downtown district before continuing through surrounding neighborhoods and eventually ending at the former site of the infamous Alexander Hamilton public housing complex, once one of Paterson’s most well-known housing projects before its demolition.
