She left everything behind in France, her house, her savings, her entire life as she knew it and moved alone to South India to do what almost no one else would. Today, Veronique looks after 110 dogs inside her shelter and feeds another 150 stray dogs on the streets every single day. No government support. No outside funding. Just her, a small team she pays from her own pocket, and power cuts that can last up to five days at a time, taking out her vaccines, her food supply, and her water pump with them. India has an estimated 60 million stray dogs, more than any country on earth. 20,000 people die from rabies here every year. The government has tried culling programmes. They've failed. The science says the problem doesn't start on the street, it starts when pet owners abandon unsterilised animals, and one abandoned dog can produce 78,000 descendants in seven years. I spent a day following Veronique to understand why one person would give up everything to fight a problem this big.
