This technique allows for a rapid therapeutic action, which is why it is chosen when an immediate effect is desired. Intravenous injection introduces crystalline, isotonic or hypertonic drug solutions into the venous circulation, via a needle attached to a syringe. Larger quantities of water-soluble active substances are administered this way. Caution! Do not introduce oily solutions because they cause fat embolism and consequently death. Do not use this route for the administration of: fat-soluble substances (risk of pulmonary fat embolism); administration of irritating substances (risk of phlebitis). Purpose Therapeutic – by administering medication; a rapid therapeutic effect; achieving a high concentration of the drug in the blood, in a short time. Explorer – by administering contrast agents in radiology Places of choice for intravenous injection: Veins at the elbow fold (basilic and cephalic) Veins of the forearm Veins on the dorsal surface of the hand Subclavian veins Femoral veins Internal malleolar veins Jugular and epicranial veins in children and infants Caution! The deep venous approach is performed by doctors in protocol-operator type conditions (femoral, jugular, subclavian vein). Required materials Medical tray Medication prescribed by the doctor Solution serum (the solution used for dilution) Sterile syringe Sterile needles (one for loading the syringe with solution and another for injection, of capacities appropriate to the amount of medication prescribed) Tourniquet Disposable gloves Disinfectant swabs Bands Containers for waste collection Patient preparation Psychological preparation The patient's identity is confirmed; The intravenous injection technique and its necessity are explained; Informed consent and cooperation are obtained. Physical preparation The patient's privacy is ensured; The patient is positioned according to the segment to be injected, to make it as comfortable as possible (supine, semi-sitting position); The patient is positioned supine with the upper limb in full extension or in a sitting position on a chair, with the elbow in extension and the arm resting on a textile support on the back of the chair; The chosen site for the injection is checked and established.
