Mechanism for plastic deformation in metals
In this video I provide an introduction to the atomic level mechanism for plastic, or permanent, deformation in metals. Linear crystalline imperfections known as dislocations are introduced and we explore how dislocations permit the step-by-step breaking and reforming of atomic bonds in a crystal undergoing plastic deformation.
