THE WAY BACK IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK | PRODIGAL SON The Prodigal Son is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible, but its message goes far deeper than a tale of a rebellious son who comes home. In Luke 15, Jesus tells this story in direct response to religious leaders who were offended that He spent time with people they considered unworthy. The question at the heart of the story is not just what happened to the younger son. It is how God really feels about people who are far from Him, and how we should respond to them. The younger son demands his inheritance early, leaves home, and wastes everything on wild living. When a famine hits, he ends up feeding pigs with nothing to eat. Before he left, he probably imagined endless freedom. That is how temptation always works. It promises pleasure and never mentions the pain that follows. Proverbs 14 says there is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. A life lived apart from God always leads to destruction, and that truth should move us toward compassion rather than judgment when we see people making destructive choices. When the son finally comes to his senses and turns back toward home, he does not have to earn his way back. He does not have to get his life together first or meet a list of religious requirements. He simply has to turn around. And before he can even finish his rehearsed apology, his father sees him from a long way off, runs to him, and throws his arms around him. That detail matters. The father had been watching the horizon, waiting and hoping. God's love is not based on performance or the past. There is nothing we can do to make Him love us more, and nothing we can do to make Him love us less. This story also carries a timely message for sharing the gospel today. Many people, especially younger generations, have already seen what a life without God produces. They have watched others chase fulfillment and belonging in every direction, only to come up empty. Our job is not to convince them to turn away from something. Our job is simply to tell them who to turn toward.
