Virology Lectures 2024 #25: Therapeutic viruses
Our ability to utilize virus vectors to treat or prevent human diseases has been made possible by the contributions of basic virology research. This work has provided a fundamental understanding about viral genomes, replication, and interaction with the host that together with clinical research has created the growing field of therapeutic viruses. In this final session of Virology Lectures 2024, we describe different viruses used for gene therapy, how they work, and examples of their use for treating bacterial infections, vaccines, monogenic gene therapy, and viral oncotherapy. I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this YouTube channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more. New videos are uploaded several times each week. I do not run ads on our work as it is disruptive to learning.
