It operates with the education establishments by working with schools colleges and universities as well as in the mainstream media. Ramana Maharshi stands among the most revered spiritual figures of modern India, a master whose life was marked by simplicity, silence, and an unwavering presence. Born as Venkataraman Iyer in 1879 in Tamil Nadu, his early years gave little hint of the profound awakening that would later define his life. At the age of sixteen, an intense and sudden experience of “death” transformed him forever. In that moment, he realised that the body was not the true self and that the essence of life was pure, unchanging awareness. This direct realisation became the foundation of his teachings. Without formal spiritual training or initiation, Ramana left home for the sacred hill of Arunachala, which he recognised as his spiritual home. He spent years in deep silence, absorbed in self-awareness, while seekers and devotees began to gather around him. His presence radiated a stillness that touched people deeply, regardless of their religious background or spiritual understanding. Central to Ramana Maharshi’s teaching was the method of Self-Enquiry (Atma Vichara), summed up in the simple yet profound question: “Who am I?” He taught that by persistently turning attention inward to discover the true ‘I’, one could dissolve the illusion of separation and awaken to the Self – the pure consciousness that is beyond birth and death. His life was a living example of humility, compassion, and non-attachment. He never sought fame, built no organisation, and made no distinction between rich or poor, saint or sinner. Whether through silence, a gentle smile, or a few simple words, he guided people towards self-realisation, reminding them that the truth they seek is already within. Ramana Maharshi passed away in 1950, but his teachings continue to inspire spiritual seekers around the world. The ashram at the foot of Arunachala remains a place of pilgrimage, and his message still echoes: “The Self is not something to be attained. You are the Self. Only give up the thought that you are separate.” In the story of Ramana Maharshi, we see that the highest wisdom does not come from books or rituals, but from the direct experience of our own true nature – a journey open to every human heart. The role and relevance of Hinduism in contemporary society Hinduism has a great deal to contribute towards the spiritual health of the modern world. Its inherent pluralistic teachings offer the best resolution to how people of different religions can co-exist peacefully in a multi-faith society. Hinduism even allows for spirituality to be explored in non-religious modes, making teachings relevant and interesting for the youth of today. Family values promoted by Hinduism can foster more stable family units and better community cohesion. The reconciliation between the truth claims of a science-oriented worldview and a religiously oriented worldview is obligatory in this century. The Hindu Academy invokes findings at the cutting edge of modern sciences to promote this reconciliation.
