Wat Kam Kor (meaning "Bunnaga Flower" in the Tai language) is located opposite Wat Phra Non. This ancient temple, a symbol of Mae Hong Son, was built in 1890 and boasts stunning architectural beauty, particularly the distinctive roof covering the walkway from the entrance archway to the pavilion. There is also a Shan language textbook on Shan history by Chao Anortha Mangcho, which has been translated into Thai by Phra Maha Boonrak Supanyo, the abbot of this temple. According to history, Wat Kam Ko was founded on January 22, 1890, a Thursday, the 13th day of the waxing moon in the 2nd lunar month of the Year of the Tiger, 1252 CE. The temple's first abbot, Khru Ba Thao, was a Shan immigrant from Chiang Thong. He initiated the construction of the temple. The locals nicknamed him "Tu Chao Chiang Tong" (pronounced in the local dialect), referring to a monk from Chiang Khong. The history of Wat Kam Ko's founding can be summarized as follows: When Khru Ba Thao immigrated from Chiang Thong to Mae Hong Son Province, he found a vacant plot of land the size of half a football field surrounded by forest, which could be used to build a temple without deforestation or land clearing. He invited the villagers to observe the site and decided to build a temple there. The villagers sourced the construction materials and labored independently. A unique feature of Wat Kam Ko is the "Sang Huang," a paved walkway leading from the entrance archway to the main kuti. This is a unique structure found nowhere else but at this temple. The archway of the "Sang Huong" serves as a place for taking off one's shoes, then walking along the paved path to the main kuti. The roof of the Sang Huong provides protection from the sun and rain for a distance of over 100 meters. On January 15, 1987, the temple restored the Sang Huong, preserving all of the original structure, especially the intricately designed seven-tiered castle above the archway, after 53 years of construction. Important features of Wat Kam Ko: 1. The principal Buddha image (the current Supreme Patriarch) 2. The Mandalay Buddha image, moved from the ubosot behind the viharn of Wat Phra Phnom Jaremong Chao believed in and brought it to be enshrined at Wat Kam Ko on the 13th day of the waxing moon in the 8th lunar month, 1966, with Luang Por Kung Ma (Kamon) Kusabho Bhikkhu and Phra Maha Boonrak Supinyo. They are approximately 80 years old. 3. Phra San (approximately 114 years old) was purchased from Mandalay, Myanmar, and offered as the principal Buddha image at Wat Kam Ko when it was first built. 4. Marble Buddha in Royal Attire was purchased from Khun Bun Chu Khun Prisana Trithong and brought from Myanmar to be enshrined at Wat Kam Ko on April 7, 1990. 5. The ancient pulpit was purchased from Khun Luang Chongtiya and Nang Yoeng when the temple was first built. It is approximately 144 years old. 6.
