38 And in his teaching Jesus said: “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and greetings in the marketplaces; 39 They seek the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets; 40 They devour widows’ houses and, for a pretense, make long prayers. These will receive a more severe judgment.” 41 Sitting opposite the offering box, Jesus watched the crowd putting their money into it. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their abundance, but she gave out of her abundance.” She, however, out of her poverty, put in everything she had, all her livelihood.
