Pastebin to debate: qiUny7Dh Summary: Eastern Orthodoxy appeals to “the Church” being guided by the Holy Spirit, but the Lutheran position says EO cannot provide a non-circular way to identify that Church. EO says a council is ecumenical when it is received by the whole Church, but then “the whole Church” seems to mean the communion that receives the right councils and traditions (ie, theirs). That is circularity: Nicaea II is true because the Church received it, and the Church is identifiable as the body that received Nicaea II and the traditions of the fathers, which is their traditions. We argue then argues that councils must be judged by the apostolic faith, and the apostolic faith is normatively found in Scripture. So Hieria, Nicaea II, Ephesus II, Chalcedon, etc., cannot be validated merely by numbers of bishops or later reception; they must be tested by whether they preserve Scriptural doctrine. This is why the Lutheran appeals to 2 Timothy 3:16–17: Scripture makes the “man of God” complete/equipped, so no doctrine necessary for the Gospel should be required if it cannot be grounded in Scripture. The EO say say the whole Church received Nicaea II and rejected Hieria,” but the we ask: which Church, and how do we know it is yours rather than the Lutheran, Reformed, Anglicans, Rome, the Orientals, or another communion? EO cannot answer that without assuming EO is already the true Church.
